29 PATIENTS OF THE HEMODIALYSIS CENTER IN BUEA RECEIVED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM NDES FOUNDATION

On Friday 27th September 2019, some 29 patients of the Hemodialysis center of the Regional Hospital Buea received an incredible boost to their health care situation as members of the NDES FOUNDATION came visiting. It was an occasion of joy and hope as the desperately underprivileged patients gathered to welcome the foundation.
‘It pleases us, to gather here today, not only to offer financial assistance to you patients but to share in your pains and offer words of hope and courage as you face your personal battles. You must know you are not alone in this fight’’ said the Public Relations Officer Mr Marvin Akebe speaking on behalf of the President of the Foundation Mr. Nde Stanley. The foundation was able to pay for the dialysis fee of 17 identified vulnerable patients for a period of one month. Each of the 17 patients will thus benefit from 4 sessions of dialysis. A session of dialysis cost 5 000 FCFA representing a total of 20 000 FCFA paid for each of the patients. In addition, some other 12 needy patients were provided hormone injections and ion at a cost of 24 000 FCFA each. Presenting the patients with two checks at a total cost of 630 000 FCFA, Mr. Akebe assured them that, the foundation is looking at establishing a long-term relationship with the Hemodialysis Center that will ameliorate their overall treatment condition with improved medical equipment and back up solar power supply in the long run.

“For many of these patients, this means a lot. Many of us just can’t afford the cost of regular dialysis’’ said Pa Tambe George, President of the Hemodialysis Patient Association. Speaking on behalf of the patients, Pa Tambe thanked the foundation and prayed they returned again sometime in the future. The situation of the patients is quite deplorable. Expected to dialyze twice a week, many of the patients can’t afford the cost of transportation talk less of the dialysis fee of 5 000 FCFA per session. The patients queued up to show they appreciation and thanks. 15-year-old Epie Peter who was diagnosed for Kidney failure 10 months ago, thanked the foundation and called on the Lord to bless them all. Pa Chumacha, a 70-year-old blind patient from Melon who has been dialyzing for 4 years invoked the Gods of Mount Cameroon to pour their blessings on the foundation. Overall the patients couldn’t hide their joy and relieve.

“Every day, some of them have to leave from Kumba, Melon, Penamboko and even from Idenua to come and dialyze here” explained Mrs Monono Mourine, Head Nurse of the Hemodialysis Center. The Buea Hemodialysis Center is the sole dialysis center in the region and is highly underequipped to handle the number of patients it receives on a daily basis. The prolonged crisis in the North West and South West regions has made the situation worst for most of these patients who rely on agriculture as the sole means of livelihood. They are thus left at the mercy of well wishers and donors such as the NDES FOUNDATION for survival from this costly disease. It was thus for them a rare shot at life to receive such a huge assistance from the foundation.

The Director of the Regional Hospital, Dr. N.D. Mokake Martin was first in line to appreciate the huge gesture. “Our doors remain open and we are ready to support you in any way that you need to support us” he told the foundation team as he received them in his office. He assured them of utmost transparency and accountability in the management OF the cash handed to the Revenue Collector of the hospital to cover the bills of the 29 patients.
The occasion ended with lots of group pictures and a tour of the hemodialysis center. Members of the foundation had individual talks with the patients offering them hope and comfort, sharing in their pains at their hour of need.
